Building a layered pendant

People frequently ask about the steps involved in making some of the silver pieces in my collection. Are they cast? Do I buy molds? Do I solder pieces together? Where do I get the parts? First of all I use a medium known as metal clay (I use a precious metal version made with fine silver.) This "clay" consists of pure silver (a.k.a. fine silver) in powder form, an organic binder, and water. Together these three ingredients behave like clay (a very fast drying clay, by the way, so I have to work pretty quickly.)

Why I haven’t made a dog

If you visit my jewelry booth at a show or market, and check out my silver pendants, you'll see several bird options, a few cat options, and a smattering of other animals (more coming soon) ... but you won't see a dog. Now, to anyone who knows me, that's got to seem odd because I LOVE dogs (in a "stop what I'm doing to pet every one that I see" and "want to bring every lost puppy to my home" sort of way). In the cat vs. dog debate, I'd have to say that my flag is pretty much planted in the dog camp.

So, why do I make four or five different cat pendants but no dog?
