A Little Courage

A Little Courage

Over the years I’ve enjoyed hearing customers’ stories about my jewelry once purchased. I’ve heard about countries in which people have worn my work (would you believe Iceland? No, really!) I’ve been shown many pictures of brides and bridal parties wearing earrings and necklaces bought from me. I’ve heard about countless responses from the recipients of the jewelry customers have bought as gifts. But recently I heard the story that will undoubtedly go down as one of the sweetest I’ve ever heard.

A couple of weeks ago two women were at my booth looking at my animal pendants. I overheard one woman tell the other that her daughter would love one of the cat pendants that I had on display. A little more discussion took place between the women, and ultimately the mom in question bought the pendant shown below.

Since there was nothing unusual about the transaction, I didn’t give it much more thought until a couple of weeks later when the mom returned. Like many others have done in the past about their gift recipient friend or family member, she came back to my booth in order to tell me about Lauren, her daughter, and Lauren’s response to her new pendant. But this time it was a little different. You see Lauren is six years old and until recently she’d been having a hard time in the morning because she’d been afraid of school. Day after day Lauren resisted having to go to school. The one calming force was her cat, CiCi (the two are the best of friends.)

Seeing how happy the new cat pendant made Lauren, her mother had an idea one morning. While getting her ready for school that day, she told Lauren that she could wear her new piece of jewelry to class. She told her to think of the silver cat as a reminder of CiCi and to just rub it any time she felt afraid. Apparently throughout that first day Lauren rubbed and rubbed and felt safe. The next morning, while getting dressed, Lauren asked for her pendant to wear again. This new routine is now the norm as Lauren has made sure to wear “CiCi” to school every day ever since. This plan has worked so well that even her teacher commented to Lauren’s mother how different the six year-old has been in class. She told the mother that she often sees the little girl rubbing on her little pendant and, until it was explained to her, hadn’t understood the significance.

Hearing this story melted my heart and elicited many an “awwww” from me and everyone within earshot who got to hear the story as it was lovingly told by Lauren’s mom. These days, whenever I put out a similar piece on display at my booth, I’m reminded of a little girl who now has a little courage to take with her wherever she goes. My thanks to her mom for coming back to tell me.

Very touching story, Myriam. There is a special kind of satsfaction from knowing your work (which comes from your passion to create) holds the power to impact another person in such a profound way.

You are so right Noreen. As much as a “this is so pretty” compliment is appreciated, hearing a story like this one means a lot more.

See, Myr, you are making a difference! 🙂

As Mother Teresa once said: “We can do no great things. BUT we can do small things with great love.” God is smiling down on you right now, because you made it possible for a little girl to not be afraid.

    M.E. 🙂

Thanks Mary Ellen… a very kind thought… I’m blushing a bit right now. I hope that Lauren is doing well.
